Competition Rules

  1. Aggregate Award

1.1.         The Aggregate award consists of the results from each monthly competition held from April of each year to the following March inclusive. The Aggregate award is presented at the Club’s Annual General Meeting in April of each year.

1.2.         The Aggregate award is divided into three separate sections:

1.2a        Kevin and Kath MacKay Memorial Trophy Annual Projected Image Aggregate award

1.2b        Annual Small Print Aggregate award

1.2c         Fred Drakeford Memorial Trophy Annual Open Print Aggregate award

1.3.         The month the entries are handed into the Competition Steward is known as the competition month. (For example, entries considered to be part of the April competition are handed in at the Club meeting held in April.)

1.4.         Each member may submit up to three entries in each section each month, giving a maximum of 9 entries per member per month. Every entry is displayed and commented on at the following Club meeting and awarded a mark out of 100.

1.5.         The entrant’s name must appear on the back of each print and in the file name of any projected image. Titles for each entry are desirable.

1.6.         Prints entered in the Small Print section may be of any size or shape up to a maximum rectangular size of 13 x 18cm (5 inches x 7 inches) for the image area and 20 x 26cm (8 inches x 10 inches) for a mount. Panoramic print formats are acceptable but must be contained within the same image and mount sizes.

1.7.         Mounting of Small Prints is optional. However, if the Small Print is mounted, the overall dimensions of the print and mount shall be as stated above.

1.8.         Prints entered in the Open Print section may be either commercially processed, or processed by the entrant.

1.9.         Open prints may be of any size or shape provided that they fit within a rectangle of 40 x 50cm (16 x 20 inches).

1.10.      Mounting of Open Prints is optional. However, the overall dimensions of the print and mount shall be as stated above.

1.11.       Images entered into the Projected Images section will be: No more than 1920 pixels on the horizontal side.and no more than 1080 on the vertical

1.11a      Identified with the image title, the year and month of the hand-in date, and contain either the entrant’s name or initials (for example: Glory Days-0903-FS or Glory Days-0910-Fred Smith); and

1.11c      submitted either by email or on a memory stick.

1.12.      Set subjects for the year are determined by the committee.

1.13.      Marks of up to 100 are allocated to each entry. When judged by the Club’s Judging Panel, the final mark awarded to each entry shall be the average of the marks allocated by each of the participating judges. If a member has submitted entries into the competition which they are judging, they will not award points to their own entries and the average mark will be allocated from the two remaining judges.

1.14.      A Merit Certificate shall be awarded to any entry gaining an averaged mark between 75 and below 90. An Honour Certificate shall be awarded to an entry gaining an averaged mark of 90 or more.

1.15.      The winner of the annual aggregate trophy in each section shall be determined by totalling each entrant’s twenty best scores for the year.

1.16.      A tie shall be resolved by awarding the placing to the entrant with the greater number of merit or honour certificates for the year.

1.17.      An entry into any section of the monthly competitions must NOT be re-submitted in the same form in any subsequent monthly competition.

 

 2. Print and Projected Image of the Year Awards

2.1.         Denis Thompson Memorial Trophy for Projected Image of the Year

2.1a        Each entrant may submit up to four entries on any subject. Entries to this competition MUST NOT be entered in the Ron Johnston Memorial Trophy in the same year, but may be entered in a subsequent year.

2.1b        Entries must be submitted to the Competition Steward at the Club’s November meeting and can only be selected from projected images entered in the aggregate competition from November of the previous year to October of the current year inclusive.

2.1c         Entries must be the actual images entered in the corresponding section of the monthly competition. They MUST NOT be altered in any way.

2.2.         Fred Schult Memorial Trophy for Open Print of the Year

2.2a        Each entrant may submit up to four entries on any subject.

2.2b        Entries to this competition MUST NOT be entered in the Ed Conway Memorial Trophy in the same year, but may be entered in a subsequent year.

2.2c         Entries must be submitted at the Club’s November meeting.

2.2d        Entries into this competition can only be selected from those prints entered in the Club’s Open Print monthly competitions held between November of the previous year to October of the current year inclusive.

2.3.         Ralph Petty Perpetual Trophy for Small Print of the Year

2.3a        Each entrant may submit up to four entries on any subject.

2.3b        Entries to this competition MUST NOT be entered in the Ed Conway Memorial Trophy in the same year, but may be entered in a subsequent year.

2.3c         Entries must be submitted at the Club’s November meeting.

2.3d        Entries into this competition can only be selected from those prints entered into the Club’s Small Print monthly competitions held between November of the previous year to October of the current year inclusive.

 3. Ron Johnston Memorial Trophy – Landscape or Seascape Projected Image

3.1.         Subject matter for entry into this Award is restricted to landscapes and/or seascapes projected images only – see below for landscapes/seascapes definition.

3.2.         The entry can be submitted as a digital image (sized to 1024×768 pixels) or as a slide. The Competition Steward will scan and correctly size all slides submitted. These scanned images and the digital images form the basis of the projected image competition and will be judged together.

3.3.         Each entrant may submit up to two digital images or slides into this competition.

3.4.         Images entered for this trophy:

3.4a        Shall NOT be entered in the Denis Thompson Memorial Trophy for Projected Image of the Year competition in the same year.

3.4b        Can only be entered in this competition once.

3.4c         Need not necessarily have been entered into any previous competition.

3.5.         The trophy is for 12 months; after this time a medallion is given to the recipient.

 4. Ed Conway Memorial Trophy- Landscape or Seascape Print

4.1.         Subject matter for entry into this Award is restricted to landscapes and/or seascapes prints only – see below for landscapes/seascapes definition.

4.2.         Prints may be commercially processed [printed] or processed [printed] by the entrant.

4.3.         Prints may be of any size provided that they fit within a rectangle of 40 x 50 cm (16 x 20 inches).

4.4.         Mounting of prints entered into this Award is optional. However, if prints are mounted, the overall dimensions of each print and mount shall be as stated above.

4.5.         Each entrant may submit up to two prints.

4.6.         Prints entered for this trophy:

4.6a        Shall NOT be entered in the Print of the Year competition in the same year, but may have been entered in previous Print of the Year competitions.

4.6b        May be entered in this competition once only.

4.6c         Need not necessarily have been entered in any previous competition.

4.7.         The trophy is held for 12 months; after this time a medallion is given to recipient.

Landscape / Seascape definition:

Landscape Images are images featuring the natural scenery of the terrain. Objects such as people or man made objetcs may be included, but must not dominate the images.

Seascape images are images in which sea or waves predominate. Coastal features or the shoreline may be included, but must not dominate the images.

 5. General Guidelines for Entry into the Club’s Awards

5.1.         Any entry that does not meet the relevant competition rules and conditions shall be handled at the discretion of the Competition Steward, whose decision shall be final.

5.2.         All photographs entered for competitions MUST be the work of the entrant – in that they have taken the photograph themselves. Processing or manipulation of photographs is allowable as follows:

5.2a        Entries may be wholly or partly, processed by others.

5.2b        Entries may be masked, toned, hand-coloured or be otherwise electronically manipulated to achieve a desired result.

5.3.         There is no limit to the age of the entry except in the Projected Image of the Year and Print of the Year sections.

5.4.         Prints and projected images may be in colour or black and white.

5.5.         Judging of Club monthly competitions and Awards can be by:

5.5a        Guest judges – up to a maximum of four times during the Club year (from April to March the following year)

5.5b        Members of the Club’s Judging Panel – to a minimum of twice during the Club year (from April to March the following year)

5.5c         Individual selected members – throughout the Club year (from April to March the following year).
